It's getting cold! At least relatively, and especially in my drafty garage studio with no heater. But I get to wear silly hats to stay warm:

I just need to finish up a few pieces, and start one or two more for my graduate portfolio. I'm feeling pretty productive these days despite the weather...NPR and KPCC keeps me going strong! There was an interesting article On Being today on "The Inner Landscapes of Beauty." Food for thought and all that.

These are all smaller paintings I did towards the end of the semester, studies and quick observational sketches (except for the last one, which was done from a photograph/memory). They were all in the Holiday Art Show sale, and I sold one! It was my first sale in a more formal setting, very exciting.

My final piece for figure sculpture--I constructed a chicken wire armature, stuffed it with newspaper, and then fleshed it out with clay! I worked partially from a machette, imagination, and the model.

Studio and Protest

I started some small painting studies around the studio--it's a never-ending source of composition and colors!
And last Friday we had the "Artists Against Furlough" (fun day) Protest. We all sat out on 7th street painting en plein air, and demonstrating our commitment to our education. It was a big success, the Pres even brought us sandwiches!

I am entering week 3 of of my last year here at Long Beach! Very exciting and a little scary. I'm taking Concentrated Studies in Life Drawing/Painting, BFA Caps, Figure Sculpture, Italian Literature, History of Drawings and Prints, and Comic Spirit. Whew! Here is a 10 minute sketch I did with clay in my beginning sculpture class last week--it kind of just looks like a blob...but it's so much fun! Like gesture drawing in 3D.

School is keeping me very busy, and I don't have internet at my new apartment, but I'll try to update as often as I can (which will probably be pretty often since I'm going to be living in my studio this year :)

New Stuff

So I've returned from the distant land of Italia. I'm still processing; a year is a long time. I've been giving terrible accounts of my time there so far...from "it was great!" to "um, it was interesting?" It's hard to sum up a whole year in a short sweet explanation (so go here if you want!) Let's leave it at it was a wonderful busy beautiful year and I'm glad to be back (for now).

I've been trying to paint more, but I've found this relaxing lazy summer to be getting in the way. Here is what I've managed to spit out so far--a quick landscape at Malibu, painted on redwood panel (painting on a rough texture was interesting...)
a very quick one of lambchops before they were tossed in a marinade for dinner,
Not too sure about this one...but I definitely want to paint more veggies! Everything at the farmer's market is so colorful and gorgeous right now.
A quick self portrait....I'm half way sick of painting myself, and half driven insane to want to get it right one of these days!
And finally, a conte self portrait I just did. I don't think I've done one of these since Yu Ji's intermediate life drawing class, but I think I actually really like the material..more color than just charcoal or graphite, but not so much as to distract me from everything else!
That's all for now. Moving back to LB soon...I'm excited to get immersed in school once more. I'll keep you posted :)
